I’ve been designing, creating and altering all kinds of garments for over 25 years. From hemming trousers to making the most elaborate wedding dresses I have experience with all forms of ladies attire.
It all started for me soon after I graduated university and almost immediately discovered that office work wasn’t for me and that sitting at a desk for the rest of my life was not going to fulfil my personal growth requirements. So I went out; bought a used sewing machine and took my first steps into clothing design. I started doing alterations and the like for friends and their contacts. Within 2 years I had over 300 customers and 650 by year 5.
20 years later the need for a change of environment meant re-locating and a fresh start. Moving to the UK meant that for the first time in well over two decades I joined the marketplace. Over a period of 4 years I freelanced with some of London’s finest designers and aside from acquiring additional new skills I had the most wonderful experience working with unusual fabrics such as leather and neoprene.
But, I felt most comfortable working with wedding gown designers. Their meticulous attention to detail, complicated layering, sheer garment size and spectacular materials makes these wonderful bespoke garments a pleasure to work on. It completely lends itself to me with vast amounts of fine hand sewing and meticulous sizing.
Progressing to going on my own was prompted when one of my employers asked if I’d mind altering vintage wedding dress for one of her friends – originally worn by her mother. It was heaven; having to dismantle a fragile, complicated, multi layered dress; work out it’s inner details and making it fit a different, completely unique female body… It fit so perfectly that the bride-to-be cried…
So; here we are. Now working full time for myself doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally freelance for past employers. The often call me help design new collections, create samples, assist with difficult fits and perform alterations or repairs. It’s great; keeps my skills fine tuned to assist you!
